We want families to know exactly what to expect.
The total of $23,502 includes all compulsory Jane fees for a new student in a standard single room, with no additional compulsory college charges.
The first-year charges cover the application and acceptance fees, building levy, Student Club membership and academic gown hire.
A separate $500 bond also applies (refundable when you leave College minus a $50 Alumni Association fee).
Any optional costs, such as selected ticketed events, will always be clearly communicated.
Compare the whole weekly budget
When comparing student accommodation, it helps to look beyond the advertised weekly fee.
At Jane, your meals, utilities and Wi-Fi are already included. With self-catered accommodation, groceries and any bills that aren’t covered need to be added to the total, along with time for shopping, cooking and cleaning up.
Students may also need to budget for sport, social activities and entertainment. Jane’s fees cover Student Club membership, and many organised activities are included, although some major events may have an additional cost.

Jane’s 38-week option covers the academic year, including the mid-year break, without committing you to paying for summer accommodation you may not need.
That can mean committing to 4-14 fewer weeks than other accommodation options.
A 52-week Jane option is also available for students remaining in Hobart throughout the year.

Jane’s weekly fee covers your room, three meals a day, utilities, Wi-Fi, academic support and residential wellbeing support. For new students in 2027, compulsory first-year charges total $1,158, bringing the total for a standard single room over 38 weeks to $23,502. A separate $500 refundable bond applies. Some optional activities and selected ticketed events cost extra, and we’ll always make those costs clear.
With Jane’s 38-week academic-year contract, you don’t pay for accommodation over the summer period outside your contract. If you’re planning to stay in Hobart throughout the year, we also offer a 52-week option.
Yes. The mid-year break is included in your 38-week contract, so your room stays yours and you can leave your belongings in place. Whether you head home or stay at Jane, there’s no need to pack up and move out.

¹Based on publicly available 2026 fees for 22 comparable Australian fully catered residential colleges offering standard single rooms. Among the 23 colleges assessed, Jane’s weekly fee was the second lowest and $163 below the median. Scholarships, optional discounts, refundable bonds and inconsistent one-off charges were excluded.
²Self-catered student accommodation is based on confirmed 2027 UTAS rates. The estimated share-house cost of $309 per week and food cost of $119 per week are based on the Australian Government’s Study Australia Cost of Living Calculator. The share-house estimate includes utilities, and the food estimate uses a moderate at-home food budget for a student living in Hobart.
Private renters and self-catered students may also need to purchase cookware, crockery, cleaning equipment and other household essentials. These costs have not been included.
