General
Absolutely. You’re welcome to book a tour anytime or come say hi at Open Day — we’d love to show you around.
There’s no curfew at Jane. Your FOB key gives you 24/7 access, even when the gates are locked at night. If you’re under 18, there is an evening check-in requirement to help keep you safe and supported.
Yes, student parking is available at Jane. You can request a spot when you apply — just keep in mind there’s a small fee, and spaces are limited, so it’s first in, best dressed.
Of course. Friends and family are very welcome to visit you at any time. For overnight guests, we just ask that you sign them in and out using our online guest registration — it helps us keep everyone safe and accounted for. If your family requires accommodation at Jane, please contact our Registrar for bookings.
Jane is conveniently located just a short 20-minute walk from both the Hobart city centre and the Sandy Bay Campus of UTAS. Plus, we run a dedicated Jane bus service throughout the semester — you can download the timetable. If you prefer, Metro buses also run along nearby Davey Street.
Yes, applications open in semester 2 to apply to stay at Jane during the summer break, or take out a 52 week contract to cover your for the summer trimester.
Casual accomodation bookings are also offered, just in case you want to pop down for a few nights to enjoy Hobart's summer scene.
Applying
Anyone planning to study at the University of Tasmania in Hobart can apply to live at Jane. This includes both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Applying to live at Jane is easy and happens in five simple steps:
- Register – Sign up online to get your Entry ID and password.
- Apply – Complete your application form online.
- Pay – Submit the application fee.
- Offer – We’ll email you an offer for accommodation at Jane.
- Accept – Confirm your spot by paying the acceptance fee.

No, you don’t need an offer in hand — you just need to intend to apply to the University of Tasmania. In fact, applying to Jane early can help you get everything sorted sooner – especially with University's Schools Recommendation Program (SRP)
If you apply to Jane and get an SRP offer your uni could all be sorted before you've even sat you first years exam.

Rooms and facilities
Student rooms vary in size from compact to very large. Some rooms have en-suites for an additional charge, however, most residents share bathroom facilities. You’re always welcome to book a tour and see the rooms for yourself. Just get in touch to arrange a visit.
At Jane you will have your own personal, fully furnished room, including bed, mattress, desk, chair and wardrobe. Each room comes with a heater. You are welcome to decorate your room and make it feel like home.
Yes. You can request single-gender accommodation when you apply by letting the Registrar know. We also have a limited number of ensuite rooms available for an extra cost.
Most of our rooms are single occupancy. Unfortunately, share rooms are not available. We want you to have your own safe haven and make you room your own.
Masters & PhD students who have families or partners and are living in apartment may seek approval for shared accomodation.
Yes, keeping your room clean is your responsibility. We provide vacuums on each floor for you to use, but you’ll need to bring your own cleaning supplies. Don’t worry — our amazing cleaning team takes care of the common areas like shared bathrooms and hallways.
Yes. All Jane residents have 24/7 access to laundry facilities, and there’s no extra charge to use them.
In addition to your personal fully furnished room, we have shared kitchenettes and common rooms where residents can relax and hang out with friends.
We have several recreational areas where residents can watch TV, play pool and table tennis, or use the tennis court to play basketball, netball, badminton and a range of other sports and activities. For those studying music or who like playing a musical instrument, there are several music practice spaces to use.
There are a number of quiet study spaces available for individual or group use with a whiteboard and large tables.
We also have beautiful gardens and are only a short stroll from the South Hobart shopping strip with local grocer and coffee shops.
Living at Jane is about more than accommodation. It's your home away from home, where you'll find the support to excel and get the most out of your university journey.

Fees do not cover cleaning of your room, university fees, parking, books, stationery, printing, photocopying, linen and bedding, soap powder and academic gown. Rooms with an ensuite and some very large rooms attract an additional charge.
The College has WiFi in all internal spaces. The College provides unlimited WiFi to all residents and is included in the cost of fees.
Jane’s meals
Yes. We know how important it is to have more time for studying and relaxing, so Jane offers three tasty meals every day, seven days a week — all prepared by our dedicated in-house catering team. In fact, we’re the only fully catered student accommodation in Hobart.
During swotvac and exams, we go the extra mile with extra afternoon teas and suppers to keep you fuelled and focused.
The food at Jane is first rate - so our students tell us. With a good variety of western and Asian style dishes at evening meals plus regular omelette and pancake breakfasts the meals at Jane offer something for everyone. We provide a variety of special meals including gluten-free and vegetarian. Halal options are also available.
CateringJane is first and foremost a community. Communal dining is central to bringing all residents together in much the same way that a family may gather at the dining table each evening for dinner.
Self-catering is not available to undergraduate students.
Self-catering is available to a limited number of master's and PhD students. Students who self-cater are still expected to attend formal dinners as part of their time at Jane. They may also choose to purchase a meal package for the whole year or meal vouchers in the College Dining Hall.
Yes. All Jane residents receive 12 meal vouchers for immediate family members per year (excluding formal dinners). For extended family and friends, meal vouchers are available to purchase from the office.
If for whatever reason you’ll miss out on lunch, you can grab a takeaway lunch (salads, sandwiches and fruit) during breakfast for the same day.
If you’re going to miss dinner between 5:30-7pm, all you have you to do is complete the late meal book in the kitchen by 2pm of the same day and there will be a meal in the fridge waiting for you when you get back to Jane.
