Under-18 students

Under-18 students

We recognise that students under the age of 18 are navigating the transition between adolescence and adulthood. We provide a safe, structured environment that supports this change with warmth, consistency and care.

A balanced approach to care and independence

Jane is committed to balancing the legal and ethical duty of care with the developmental needs of young adults. Our goal is to encourage independence while maintaining close oversight of each student’s welfare.

We do this by:

  • Placing clear responsibilities on under 18 students, including compulsory attendance at academic mentoring sessions, check-ins, and respectful conduct
  • Providing personalised support and supervision, tailored to each student’s maturity and needs
  • Ensuring students are actively involved in College life, and ensuring staff and mentors are available at all times.

Additional responsibilities for international students

For international students under 18, Jane is approved by the University of Tasmania to provide accommodation and welfare under a Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW). This carries with it additional legal responsibilities, which we meet with care and professionalism.

We ensure that:

  • All international under 18 students live in College-approved, secure accommodation
  • Students are met on arrival at the airport in Hobart if travelling alone and not accompanied by a parent or guardian through pre-approved transport arrangements
  • Any overnight stay away from College is approved in writing by their parent or guardian
  • Welfare and attendance are monitored closely in line with student visa requirements
  • Families and education agents are kept fully informed

Our Registrar manages all CAAW documentation and liaises with families, guardians, and the University to ensure every requirement is met.

Safety, supervision and support

All under 18 residents live in secure, single rooms and have access to gender-appropriate facilities. Our team—including Senior Residents and the Dean of Students—are trained to provide proactive care and early intervention.

Our under 18 welfare measures include:

  • Compulsory nightly check-ins between 6:00pm and 8:00pm
  • 24/7 on-site staff presence
  • Individualised wellbeing check-ins
  • Alcohol-free social spaces, such as the Coffee Lounge
  • Healthy meals provided seven days a week, with dietary needs accommodated
  • Regular communication with parents or guardians through "Plain Sheet"
  • Compulsory attendance at academic mentoring sessions

Mrs Libby Hopkins

Registrar

Dip. Tchg.; TTC

Known as the most stylish woman at Jane, Libby is the first point of contact when applying to Jane. She manages to reassure incoming residents and parents alike with her calm and kind advice. Libby has been at Jane for over 20 years, welcoming over 1000 students to the College in that time. Always busy, Libby relaxes by spending time with her grandson, gardening, going out with friends and barracking for Essendon. A new pastime is getting out on the river in her partner’s new boat.
