Tasmania is home to some talented young storytellers, and Jane College is proud to help celebrate their work through our sponsorship of the Jane College Prose Awards in the 2026 Young Tasmanian Writers’ Prize.
The annual short story competition celebrates the creativity and literary talent of young Tasmanians in Years 7–12.
This year’s awards brought young storytellers together in the Lord Mayor’s Courtroom to recognise their achievements.

A special congratulations to our two Jane College Prose Award winners:
- Senior section: Bridget Ng, Hobart College, for Seagull song.
- Junior section: Charlotte Hiscock, Fahan School, for What the creek kept.
Sponsored by Forty South Publishing and the Tasmanian Association for the Teaching of English (TATE), the competition gives young writers an opportunity to share their stories and develop their craft.
Speaking at the awards, Jane College Principal Joanna Rosewell reflected on the value of storytelling.
“Stories help us understand other people, make sense of our own experiences and see the world through a different pair of eyes,” she said.
“Whether or not you receive a prize, having the courage and imagination to put your ideas onto a page, and then to let someone else read them, is something worth celebrating.”
Congratulations to Bridget, Charlotte and all this year’s prize recipients and finalists. We look forward to seeing their work in up and coming / 26, due for publication in late October.
