Jane resident and first-year law student Jack Cramp has returned from Adelaide with an outstanding national result after his University of Tasmania team reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Law Student Association’s Championship Moot.
Being selected to represent the University of Tasmania was a significant achievement for Jack, who is only in the first year of his law degree.
The Championship Moot simulates a higher-court hearing, with students presenting legal arguments before a judge.
This year’s problem examined the constitutional validity of a tax and whether a government had been unjustly enriched through its payment.
Jack spoke in every round of the competition, presenting arguments on behalf of both a fictional private citizen and the South Australian Government.
Competing against 18 university teams from across Australia, the University of Tasmania team progressed to the quarter-finals, placing among the final eight after victories against teams including Bond University and the University of Notre Dame.
“As a first-year student, it was incredible to be selected to represent the University of Tasmania,” Jack said.
“The problem was especially complex because it involved areas of law I have not yet encountered in my degree.
“The experience reinforced my passion for the law and I now have the feeling that I just want to keep learning more and more about it. It has already been a fascinating learning experience.”
Jane’s Dean of Academic Studies, Sally Fuglsang, said Jack’s achievement was particularly impressive for a first-year student.
“We are incredibly proud of Jack. He is a dedicated student who is passionate about the Law and has achieved so much in his first year at Jane and UTAS.”
